Artist InformationChiko was born in Tokyo in 1945 and grew up in Japan, where the culture of ceramics is extremely highly-regarded. She moved to Hong Kong in 1968 and after years of family life and the responsibilities it entailed, she completed her ceramic studies with a Chinese Master Potter in 1991. Moving with her husband to settle in Australia in 1995 Chiko was able to devote more time to developing her own styles and skills with ceramics, especially porcelain and set up her own home studio. She has become known for her delightfully decorative pieces which marry oriental designs of delicate flowers and rhythmic patterns with brooches depicting the map of Australia or teapot shapes, but also for her wonderful tea sets using very tactile forms and her understanding of Eastern tradition. Chiko graduated from the Australian National University, ACT in Distance Ceramics in 2004. This has encouraged her great interest in porcelain and the ability to hand-carve works with her own 'marks' and highlight the beauty and delicacy of translucence in the medium. It has also brought many new opportunities to exhibit works farther afield.
