Many Thanks, Jane and Tony
Sculptor – bronze and sandstone.

Born; Brisbane, Queensland
Resides; Brisbane, Queensland

After leaving school, Rhyl worked for four years as an artist at the Queensland Natural History Museum, but it was during the seventies that her career as a sculptor became truly established.
“In 1976, I won a national competition for a commission to complete the carving in the Great Court of the University of Queensland, and over 30 years later, I am still regularly working on this monumental task, having created over 250 individual carvings, several of monumental proportion. This work is of historic, long-term significance and has been listed by the National Trust since 1990.
Extensive stone carving in “Wordsmiths, The Writer’s Café” has highlighted my choice of subjects inspired by the publications of the University of Queensland Press. This too is an on-going commission, bearing with it, a great deal of responsibility for authenticity."

Many major commissioned sculptural works have been completed over the last 30 years, perhaps the most prestigious being the ceramic Australian Coat of Arms in the House of Representatives in Parliament House, Canberra, ACT. This was the first art work commissioned and completed for the complex in 1987. A 120% life-size bronze equestrian figure, “Man from Snowy River” is my largest bronze to date, and my original designs and sculpture in a variety of media have been commissioned for the most prestigious tourist resorts in the country including the reception areas of Mirage Resorts, both Gold Coast and Port Douglas, Marriott International Hotel and Pan Pacific Broadbeach.”

Other monumental commissions include such pieces as the RAAF Memorial, Queens Park, Brisbane; the David Wilkes Memorial, Toowoomba Turf Club; the Museum Replica Turtles, Nagoya Aquarium, Japan; the Sandford Jackson Portrait Freize, Wesley Hospital, Brisbane; and the Memorial to the Australian Forces in Korea and S.E. Asia, Anzac Square, Brisbane. Many further commissioned works can be found in nearly all the private schools in Brisbane. One of the delights for any artist whose work is predominantly commissioned, is the freedom found when creating purely for its own sake and this is most apparent in Rhyl’s rare smaller sculptures.
