Ian Mastin is a highly skilled artist and had no idea that he possessed his talent until taking to drawing as a pastime in the 1990s. He also took to watercolours, but then saw an exhibition of still life paintings and instantly knew that was what he wanted to do. So he bought himself acrylic paints and set to work! His meticulous images are a reflection of his personality and he applied himself to mastering the techniques required by studying books and endlessly practicing and taking notes. Within a short time, his paintings were attracting a lot of interest and he became a full-time artist. His passion for fine wine, cheese and even classic cigars provide many of the subjects for his traditional, but contemporary works and it is his ability to portray an alluringly ripe strawberry or a creeping, ready to spread brie which holds the viewer’s attention. These are expertly crafted paintings, but one of the keys is that Ian includes the imperfections such as a blemish on a pear skin, emphasising the reality of his scenes. He also wants to convey the beauty of ordinary things and that they have a history of their own, especially to their owners, who may span generations. He says he would like his art to make people“..pause a moment and consider those who have passed this way before, and of the fleeting nature of life.”
His ability to recreate a finely engraved antique glass so that you can feel the stem in your hand or the smooth feel of a bone-handled knife brings each artwork to life certainly achieves this.
Ian's latest exhibition 'Exquisite Beauty' is now showing at 'Art on Cairncross until August 25, 2019.
Open Tuesday to Sunday 10.00am to 5.00pm
