'Nocturnal' oil paintings by Kim Wilson at Art on Cairncross.

'Nocturnal' is an exhibition of small oil paintings by Brisbane artist Kim Wilson. Kim and her husband Peter are adventurers who have traversed the Pacific Ocean from the southern ocean all the way up to Siberia. Whilst recovering from shoulder surgery Kim came across imagery of animals captured by motion sensitive cameras. This then became 'Nocturnal', small paintings she could produce and not re-damage her shoulder. An intriguing look at what happens after dark in the animal kingdom.
Rarely seen imagery of animals in their nocturnal habitat.
The exhibition opens on Saturday April 6th at 3.00pm. All welcome.
The exhibition continues until April 28th, 2019

Included in the exhibition are 3 large paintings by Kim indicative of the size of work usually painted.

Tony Lewis has been a professional artist for over 40 years. His remarkable control of watercolour allows him to portray light & mood brilliantly. The serenity of a rural scene or the howling winds of a blustery seascape are all expertly conveyed & never over-worked.
Dawn Lewis brings a softness to her paintings, but these are strong in result. Many of her artworks are glimpses of a larger scene, telling a story through a vignette. Recent pieces have a wonderful loose approach & still a captivating intrigue.

Meet Tony & Dawn at Art on Cairncross between 10.30am and 12 noon on Saturday March 9th.

Art on Cairncross hosts 'Boys from the Bush' a feature of paintings & drawings by Tom McAulay and bronze and boulder opal sculptures by Chris Gavins. Both artists are truly ‘boys from the bush’ which is their inspiration. Tom spent much time on properties with stockmen and livestock, while Chris is a passionate birdwatcher. Each portrays these themes from the heart.

These skillfully crafted still life acrylic paintings convey the play of light spectacularly and are so detailed you feel you could eat the fruit or take a sip out of the glass. 'Fragments of the Sublime' by Johanna De Maine

Art on Cairncross, Maleny presents “Fragments of the Sublime” a new exhibition of exquisite porcelain artworks by Johanna De Maine. Her world-class pieces featuring lustre glazes including gold and intricate sand-etching and enamel, are often inspired by her local environment of the Glasshouse Mountains. However, they are to be found across the globe in major collections from H.M. The Queen to The Porcelain Museum, Jingdezhen in China, as well as in the National Gallery of Australia and Queensland Art Gallery.

'In the Moment' with Rick Everingham & Eddie Wentorf

Noted Queensland painter Rick Everingham and bronze sculptor Eddie Wentorf are the artists in Art on Cairncross's July feature, 'In the Moment'. 'Earth Connections' by Rex Backhaus-Smith & Rowley Drysdale.

'Earth Connections' combines the talents of two senior Queensland artists. Rex Backhaus-Smith & Rowley Drysdale both come from the land. This is evident in their inspired use of earthy colours in their chosen fields of painting and ceramics.

'A Wonderful Life' by Nan Paterson.

Jane and Tony from Art on Cairncross are proud to present the last 'unsold' works by the much loved Queensland artist Nan Paterson. Nan, who died in 2015 aged 92 , was a gifted artist and the family have made this selection of works available for sale.
This feature runs for 2 weeks only from February 13 to 25, 2018.

Nan Paterson 1923 - 2015

  Nan Paterson was a remarkable artist, which is immediately apparent on seeing the quality of her works first-hand. Her inherent artistic ability was honed by the rigours of ‘old-school’ teaching which shows in her discipline towards her art, that allowed her talent to then speak for itself.
   This feature of paintings & drawings is further proof of the importance of essential skills in art & Nan was part of an irreplaceable era of Australian artists with dedication, exacting standards & a strong drawing base.
In this the last feature of unsold work (some never before exhibited) there will be beautifully crafted still life oil paintings alongside a wonderful selection of both framed & unframed nude studies in charcoal, pastel & silverpoint.
Nan enjoyed a wonderful life. She resided in Maleny for many years & is fondly remembered by all who knew her.

Merry Christmas !
Jane and Tony would like to wish you a safe and Merry Christmas and every good wish for 2018.
Our sincere thanks to you for all your continued support and we look forward to seeing or hearing from you in the coming year. This has been another year of wonderful creativity and exhibitions and naturally, we are looking forward to a very arty new year.

Art on Cairncross is proud to present a feature of paintings by Central Queensland artist Sarah Larsen.
Sarah paints heartfelt, often semi-abstract landscapes based on her home in Central Queensland. In her highly awarded career, she has always taken inspiration from her environment depicting feelings as well as visions, but always with optimism and colour.
This feature continues at Art on Cairncross until November 26th.

Art on Cairncross hosted an enthusiastic crowd on Saturday October 7th for the opening of Ann & Gerry O'Connor's exhibition 'Showtime'.

They were treated to an fine opening speech by Maleny artist Fiona McCarron who has known them for many years.

'Showtime' by Ann & Gerry O'Connor opens on Saturday October 7th at Art on Cairncross, Maleny.
Join us at 3.00pm for the official opening by Maleny artist Fiona McCarron. All welcome!
This remarkable couple have been lifetime partners and share a studio, but have maintained their individual approaches to clay.
Gerry O’Connor works in the Western approach to Raku creating intriguing figures and mesmerising glazes. “It is the branch of ceramics that fires my imagination and suits my personality. I love its directness, vigour and colour. I create more decorative and sculptural items” he explains.
Ann O’Connor uses white clay as the basis for her intricately sculpted figurative works and bright underglazes to great effect. There is joy and mischief in much of it and sheer wonderment at the detail.
“Showtime” is a new collection of works drawn from burlesque to baroque, but also encompasses the meaning of the ceramicists putting themselves on show too. All of it is entertaining and engaging.

We are very happy to have the work of jeweller Michele Carnie at Art on Cairncross.
Australian born Michele has returned from working in the UK perfecting her craft. Working with sterling silver, she draws her inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement, with nature supplying ideas for her designs, whilst other designs are free form, evolving step by step during the creative process.

Michele's love of colour shows in her range of gemstone jewellery to complement her silver designs, created using quality semi-precious stones and freshwater pearls from around the world. She prefers to keep her jewellery to individual, one-off pieces, and each piece is made by her own hand.

'Rust & Lace' by Nathalie Bastier

Art on Cairncross presents "Rust & Lace", an exhibition of wall-hanging assemblages by Nathalie Bastier. Predominantly pieces of rusted metal are combined and contrasted with delicate lace or other old items to create artworks of social commentary, balance and new beauty. There is humour and much to discover in each work.
The exhibition opens on Saturday August 12th at 3.00pm (all welcome) and continues until September 17th.

Diversity of Land & Spirit - Judith Laws & Rex Backhaus-Smith

Rex Backhaus-Smith and Judith Laws are leading Queensland artists and while both are greatly influenced by the landscape, they convey their visions in individually unique ways. Recent travels, including along the Don Quixote trail, have been further inspirations for their new exhibition “Diversity of Land & Spirit”. This is a visually stunning and vibrant collection of paintings, certain to bring joy.

'Bronzed Aussies' wildlife sculptures by Chris Gavins

Chris Gavins has a passion for birdwatching – one might actually call it an obsession. He likes nothing better than driving out West and sitting quietly for hours watching all manner of native birds. These are therefore also his favourite creatures for his beautifully crafted, bronze sculptures. From small scale kookaburras to life-size rainbow bee-eaters, all his works are finely and accurately detailed, but not overworked. Despite the weight of bronze, they convey the lightness of flight or the delicacy of a tiny wren’s leg just perfectly. In this way Chris is sharing his indepth knowledge about birdlife and an added bonus from these trips has been observing lizards, which also feature strongly in his work.
Larger works also incorporate boulder opal collected from trips to Quilpie in Western Queensland.

'Imperfect Beauty' by Rowley Drysdale

Art on Cairncross presents 'Imperfect Beauty', a wood fired ceramics exhibition by Rowley Drysdale.
Rowley Drysdale has been a professional artist for over 25 years with a particular passion for wood-fired ceramics.
His new exhibition “Imperfect Beauty” explores the idea that perfection does not embody beauty, in fact it is the imperfections in things which add to their individuality and allure. From small vessels to intriguing mixed media wall hangings, these works show that beauty is often unexpected, but always inspiring.
About “Imperfect beauty”, Rowley writes;
“On page 100 of the first ceramics textbook I ever read cover to cover, author Robin Hopper
comments on differing perspectives concerning beauty. He argues it’s the imperfections, the
blemishes, on our loved ones’ faces that ultimately attract us.
I use materials and methods that, especially in my medium, don’t always run to script.
Regularly I discover the odd ones out, which take a little longer to comprehend. Perhaps initially it’s an attraction to the subversive, but I’ve noticed these works are more likely to hold one’s
attention ad infinitum than their slick counterparts.
Poet Michael Dransfield (1948-1973) stated it perfectly when he wrote “cherish your freaks and
bastards”.

Exhibition of Jim Kinch's paintings at Caloundra Chamber of Commerce.

Art on Cairncross is hosting an exhibition of paintings by Irish born Jim Kinch at the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce in Bulcock Street, Caloundra.
Jim loved painting people at play whether it be sport or leisure and he always captured movement in his paintings.
Sadly Jim died in late 2016 but I'm sure he would be happy with this particular exhibition of his work.
If you are a member of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce you can visit any time during office hours. For all others we can organise a viewing for you.
