At a recent 21st birthday party a friend commented that looking ahead 20 years seems a very long way, but looking back 20 years goes in the blink of an eye! This has most certainly been our experience in art galleries. Tony Gill Galleries opened its doors on July 1st 1995 in Montville, we opened Caraffi’s at Cairncross Corner at the end of 1998 and then amalgamated to become “Art on Cairncross” in 2002. To celebrate this anniversary the exhibition “20” will feature all of the gallery artists and works which have been inspired by the Glasshouse Mountains. These range from depictions of the view and local birds and animals, to broader interpretations of this powerful region. Oils and watercolours, glass and ceramic shine equally in this fascinating array. The majesty of the mountains in gold on Johanna De Maine’s fine porcelain or sleeping gentle giants in Tony Lewis’ traditional watercolours are a contrast to Nathalie Bastier’s Rusty Sculpture about Coonowrin Creek when dry or Marc Kalifa’s glass mountains. So, two important aspects of the area are highlighted – the mesmerizing landscape and the remarkable depth of artistic talent – and they blend to create something very special in ‘20”. |
