RECYCLED METAL SCULPTOR
Born - Western Australia
Lives - Sunshine Coast

Gerry McDonnell was born in 1957 in Western Australia. He grew up there on a wheat farm and often witnessed his father being very inventive to create or mend farm implements. Many years later having settled on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Gerry’s own creativity was initially sparked when he acquired a welder to repair rust in his car. The car was never repaired as the desire to construct sculptures from car parts, metal objects and other recycled odds and ends overtook instead.
He states rather tongue-in-cheek that he graduated from “La Titan Shed Studio” at ‘Pacifique Paradise, Queensland’, (looking remarkably like his back garden) and that his first exhibitions were private studio showings (looking remarkably like mates calling in for a beer). The serious side of this though, was the encouragement he gained from all who viewed his sculpture and urged him to display it further afield.
Gerry strives in his artwork to be ‘…raw, humourous and most definitely original.’ He creates purely to provoke a laugh or positive comment and if that end is achieved, he is happy. He maintains his art is ‘for a gag’, but is flattered when others appreciate the emotion of the work and share in the feeling behind it.

In 2001 he very successfully exhibited at the Mooloolaba Arts Festival, where he gained quite a following and there was huge interest in his sculpture. However, he modestly states he does not seek ‘fame, fortune or power’ from his art and therefore opted to just create the occasional piece in the pursuit of pleasure, rather than feel obliged to be producing work. This ethos shows through in his artworks and he therefore only sporadically displays any available works at Art on Cairncross, Maleny.
