'Exquisite Beauty'
paintings by
Ian Mastin

Ian started painting later in life after realising initally his ability to draw. These classic acrylic paintings are in the vein of the old masters and do justice to the title 'Exquisite Beauty".

“I cannot recollect any involvement with art during my school days and it was only in the mid-1980s that I began to sketch for recreation. It was at this time that I was invited to exhibit my sketches in a Brisbane gallery, with some
success. In 1991 I returned with my Scottish-born wife and our children to Britain and settled in East Lothian. It was here that I picked up a paintbrush for the first time and after a year of discovery and experimentation in fundamental techniques, I committed myself to painting full-time. As a novice painter, my early works were mainly watercolour and the subject matter varied, but it was my
discovery of Still Life in the traditional style that gave me the direction I had been seeking and the
passion to pursue my artistic goal of excellence in this genre. My chosen medium is acrylic.
I gain my inspiration from many sources without being beholden to any particular style or perceived past ‘Golden Age’. I recognize the influence of the Dutch  and Flemish Masters of the 17th Century in my work. However, I wholeheartedly embrace the fascination  and challenge of the Still Life whilst in no way feeling bound by tradition or convention. What I impart in my work is a reflection of a very personal journey.
I am instinctively drawn to the effects of chiaroscuro upon the eye and mind and I’m fascinated how the  juxtaposition of seemingly random shapes, textures, colour and tone have the capacity to arrest and
delight the viewer in ways which are difficult to define.
I particularly enjoy working with items of simple utilitarian use—the detritus of life from earlier
generations. An old, much loved and worn book or bowl can bring as much joy for me to paint as the most complex composition. Indeed, my predilection is to beget a sense of appreciation in reflecting upon old, used everyday objects which have no intrinsic value except for the richness of their history and the hands through which they have passed. In this, there is a thread running back to the life of the person who crafted and used the object, though most likely now long forgotten, as well as that same thread beckoning future generations to pause a moment and consider those who have passed this way before, and of the fleeting nature of life.”
