Johanna De Maine
Ceramics

Artist Information
Johanna De Maine is a Sunshine Coast ceramicist with an international reputation for her finely created porcelain with gold lustres.

Over 20 years of experience from experimentation to perfecting techniques and from extensive academic studies has led to recognition of these captivating bowls, pots and vessels. Johanna draws from her environment to decorate these pieces with depictions of the Glasshouse Mountains; sails through Pumicestone Passage; local pineapple plantations and the vibrant celebration of the Woodford Folk Festival. Such surroundings are a rich source of inspiration indeed and have evolved with the gold lustres to be distinctive themes of Johanna's artworks. They adorn beautifully bulbous vases; gently curving plates and oval vessels to completely appeal to the eye as works of total beauty. The gold lustres catch the light across the surfaces from many angles and add the final touch of preciousness.

The past few years have been notable for Johanna De Maine with just rewards for persevering artistically and technically with these signature ceramics. The artist has undertaken major commissions for Coca-Cola, Qantas and Sheraton further heightening her already impressive international reputation. A vessel was selected by the Premier's Department of New South Wales and presented to Her Majesty the Queen during her 2000 royal tour. Then came the award of a Churchill Fellowship to study specific issues relating to lustre glazes, in Europe in 2001. This highly prestigious award is decided on merit and "demonstrated ability for further achievement". Johanna has studied practices at Delft, Royal Copenhagen and Stoke-on-Trent and to participate in workshops at Meissen and Royal Monaco. This has not only served to broaden her own knowledge and skills but also aid other Australian artists through lectures and articles since her return. In 2004 a magnificent work entitled "Rebirth" featuring a butterfly was presented by the Governor-General of Australia as his personal wedding gift to Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and Mary Donaldson. Later in the same year an unusual work in the form of an Icon (portraying the Glasshouse Mountains rather than a religious symbol) was acquired by the Gold Coast City Art Gallery into their prestigious ceramics collection.

Already avidly collected by international and interstate connoisseurs it is worth recognising that the artist's home and influences are the Sunshine Coast. It is a unique place inspiring an experienced artist to achieve unique, precious, ceramic artworks.
