"Sunshine Coast" Ltd. Edition Print

1925 - 2006
John Coburn was born in Ingham, Queensland in 1925 and died in 2006 as one of Australia’s most recognisable and renowned artists.

His remarkable career spanned over 5 decades. Post-war he studied at the National Art School in East Sydney and after graduating he taught in high schools and then as a graphic designer for TV working on sets and more. A major influence in his life was converting to Catholicism in 1953 prior to marrying (he went on to win the Blake Prize for Religious Art in 1960 and in 1977). He taught at the National Art School for many years, then became a tapestry designer for the world-famous Aubusson Workshops in France, moving to live in Paris for a few years as his career gained ever greater recognition and momentum. He was appointed head of the National Art School in 1972, but as his work had been steadily exhibited to an increasingly appreciative audience and been acquired into major collections, he resigned two years later to focus solely on his own art.

In a career of many highlights Coburn was commissioned in 1970 to create the ‘Curtain of the Sun’ and ‘Curtain of the Moon’ for the Sydney Opera House, was awarded the Order of Australia in 1980 and even designed the Christmas stamps for Australia Post in 1999.
In that same year, Coburn very generously offered to design and donate an artwork to the new University of the Sunshine Coast to enable them to start an art collection. “Sunshine Coast” was created and became a 12 colour silk-screen print in a limited edition of 100 (each numbered and signed by the artist), which you can see here.

A substantial portion of the profits of these sales continue to go to the University arts fund.
