Watercolours, Oils, Pencil Born: Charter's Towers, Qld Resides: Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Queensland Born 1938, he pursued formal art studies from 1950 to 1955, but was drawn into a career as a dentist which reduced his time for painting, however allowed for some years of living and working in the Australian bush and in London, which provided both influences and opportunities related to his art. Between 1969 and 1979 he studied at various workshops with many influential tutors and by 1981 had relegated dentistry to part time to allow for life as an artist in the Carnarvon Ranges. John's great interest in the Bush, its history, wildlife and geography lead him to join with anthropologist Graham Walsh to produce a series of books on Aboriginal Mythology whilst also exhibiting paintings widely and tutoring. By 1990 he retired from dentistry which allowed him to take up positions as artist-in-residence across Queensland (e.g. Fraser Island, Carnarvon National Park) and the USA(Rocky Mountains National Park, Colorado & Yosemite National Park, California) and also to concentrate on sculptural works. However, it is to watercolour and the Australian bush that John always returns despite further trips to the USA and extended travels through Europe. During his career John has held over 43 solo exhibitions and multiple group exhibitions across Australia and in the USA. His work can be found in such public collections as the Department of the Interior, USA; the Queensland Government and multiple City Councils and Rural Shires as well as many corporate and private collections far and wide. In recent years he has concentrated on the life and times of Harry Readford, the colourful cattle rustler of Queensland history, about whom he has written and illustrated 2 books. He continues to focus on a lifelong goal of achieving an "Australian" approach to the power and clarity of light in our landscape. |
