Hand-blown and Cast Glass
Born: Paris, France. Resides: Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Marc Kalifa was born in Paris, France in 1951. He arrived in Darwin, Australia in 1974 and after survivng Cyclone Tracey worked as a jeweller until finding an interest and ability in creating stained glass windows in 1977 when he also relocated to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Gaining notoriety in this field he fulfilled many commissioned works including several large projects for historical monuments (e.g in Leeton, Victoria 12 windows to designs by Walter Burley Griffin). In 1985 on a study tour in France Marc had the opportunity to blow hot glass and became fascinated by the possibilities of the medium and so he converted his studio to be able to produce hot glass. Through both personal study and several workshops, Marc steadily mastered the arts of Pate-de-Verre, glass casting and cold working as well as bronze casting, which he has subsequently used in many of his sculptural works. Marc has perfected several 'signature' series of works including Terra Australis (the landscape), the Dreamers (figures within the glass) and the Sunset series (Outback desert colours) which have all helped his career to go from strength to strength along with the gaining of many awards and the completion of major commissions such as the permanent trophy for the "Outrigger Boat World Championship", series of gifts for General Motors Holden and for the Performing Arts Trust at the Brisbane Festival. Kalifa glass can be found in the permanent collections of the Tweed Shire Regional Gallery, N.S.W., the Darwin Museum of Arts and Science, N.T., and the Bright Art Centre, Victoria and in private collections across Australia and New Zealand, the USA, Japan, France, the U.K. and Singapore. "Making glass for me is an alchemical process, where I need to apply my understanding of the fire and the way it transmutes basic raw opaque materials into a translucent medium. Once this fluid medium is born, the concern with colour begins. In this context, imagery and colour consideration are somewhat more important than the form on which it is applied. More recently, my search for appropriate form has led me back to casting metal methods, as well as experimenting with wood and the combination of these shapes along with colour has stimulated my investigation of multi-medium sculpture."
