Michael Gilling was born in the Somerset village of Cheddar a long time ago, but has travelled and lived abroad extensively, including 25 annual visits to one of his favourite locations, the Sunshine Coast. Early morning walks on Mudjimba beach with the sunrise over the ocean has provided the stimulant for several of his paintings. Meeting the philosopher Phiroz Mehta in the 1980’s provided the ticket of admission to the visual arts with his pronouncement "Mankind was born to be the happy creator". Studies followed at the Bristol College of Art, the Mendip Painting School and the Open University helped the budding water colourist find the initial way forward. Exhibitions have subsequently been held with the Neroche Artist's Group, at the Folk House in Bristol, the Meeting House in Ilminster and at the Royal West of England Academy. A chance attendance a few years ago at the local Art Society's workshop on palette knife acrylic painting on board changed everything. This approach gave a lot more freedom of expression but also the challenge of less control and now is the main medium of expression. If anything Michael's art is essentially a humble attempt to celebrate the intrinsic beauty and mystery of light in what could be described as mainly semi- abstract impressionistic atmospheric landscapes. He leaves the viewer free to respond or not! |
