Artist Information
John Morrison works predominantly in watercolours but also in pencil, charcoal, pastel and enjoys the challenge of oil on canvas. His art is inspired by the specific landscapes, wildlife and mythology of National Parks and those special areas of country set aside from development.
He has returned to Queensland to concentrate on his art at the place he feels most 'at home' and greatly inspired, Carnarvon Gorge.

Born in Charters Towers, Queensland in 1938, he pursued formal art studies from 1950 to 1955, but was drawn into a career as a dentist which reduced his time for painting, however allowed for some years of living and working in the Australian bush and in London, which provided both influences and opportunities related to his art. Between 1969 and 1979 he studied at various workshops with many influential tutors and by 1981 had relegated dentistry to part time to allow for life as an artist in the Carnarvon Ranges.
John's great interest in the Bush, its history, wildlife and geography lead him to join with anthropologist Graham Walsh to produce a series of books on Aboriginal Mythology whilst also exhibiting paintings widely and tutoring. By 1990 he retired from dentistry completely which allowed him to take up positions as artist-in-residence across Queensland and the USA and also to concentrate on sculptural works. However, it is to watercolour and the Australian bush that John always returns despite further trips to the USA and an extended tour of Tuscany in 2000.
During his career John has held over 31 solo exhibitions and 27 group exhibitions across Australia and in the USA. He has been artist-in-residence at 8 locations including Kakadu National Park, Carnarvon Gorge National Park, Fraser Island, Rocky Mountains National Park, Colorado and Yosemite National Park, California and he has also been in great demand as a tutor for workshops, predominantly across Queensland. His work can be found in such public collections as the Department of the Interior, USA; the Queensland Government and multiple City Councils and Rural Shires as well as many corporate and private collections across Australia and overseas.
He continues to focus on a lifelong goal of achieving an "Australian" approach to the power and clarity of light in our landscape.
