Mixed media

Born: Nairobi, Kenya
Resides: Central Queensland

Sarah Larsen was born in Nairobi and was educated between Kenya and the UK and then travelled extensively after leaving school before settling in Australia in 1975. She has lived in Central Queensland with her husband on their property for many years and is able to once again focus on her art since their 3 children became adults. The influences of her different life experiences and especially her close understanding of the land are the basis of her vibrant artworks. Sarah paints in many media according to the subject and required effect and has recently incorporated gemstones into her paintings giving a third dimension and realistic definition to her landscapes.

"My art stems from a love and fascination for the colour and feel of the people and the land around me and my place in it. My endeavour is to capture the innate essence and spirit of life, not simply creating a mirror image. Predominantly working on paper and canvas, my favourite medium is mixed media but I will use whatever the subject dictates."

Sarah was awarded a scholarship to attend the Julian Ashton Art School in 1995. She has continued her art studies through workshops with such artists as Andrew Sibley, Tim Storrier, Irene Amos and Judith White in the areas of portraiture, contemporary figure drawing and exploring mixed media. She has also studied at TAFE a computer course (1996), Workplace Trainer (1999) and for a Certificate in Business (1999) all of which have given an even broader base for her teaching skills.
Sarah has also been involved in many group and award exhibitions as well as over 11 solo exhibitions and was selected as an exhibitor in the Biennale Internazionale Dell'Arte Contemporanea, Florence, Italy in 2003. She was also awarded the Callide Coalfields Julian Ashton Art Scholarship in 1994/5 and 1998/9. Sarah continues to teach art privately and through holding workshops, but also has been Artist-in-Residence in several areas and has maintained a commitment to art within the community assisting in schools programmes, art therapy in a respite centre and even set design and backdrops for the regional theatrical group. She has also been actively involved in Flying Arts, Artworkers Alliance and the Queensland Arts Council.

Works can be found in the Banana Shire Council Collection and the Caplec Art Collection, but her paintings have been acquired privately across Australia and overseas and Sarah has completed many private commissions.
